My husband called me on the 15th of this month to come over to his shop and take something.
And that was how I became childless in one night.

HOW IT STARTED

It began like any other ordinary afternoon.

Grace was trying to tidy up the small sitting room while her three children ran in circles, dragging the same broken toy and arguing over who owned it.

Her phone rang.

“Hello honey,” Daniel’s voice came through. “Come over to my shop so we can attend my friend’s wedding together. And please bring the kids with you. Nobody is in the compound.”

Grace closed her eyes in frustration.

“Honey, I can’t bring those three children,” she said, exhausted. “They’ll disturb me throughout the wedding.”

There was silence on the line. Then Daniel sighed.

“Just try your best,” he said before ending the call.

Grace stood still for a moment.

Then a thought crossed her mind.

“I know what to do.”

She called the children sweetly.

“Come here, my babies. Mummy has something for you.”

They rushed toward her with excitement, thinking she had bought sweets.

Instead, she gave them sleeping medicine mixed with water. One after the other, they swallowed it without suspicion.

Within minutes, their tiny bodies became heavy. Their laughter faded. Soon, all three were fast asleep on the bed.

Grace smiled with relief.

“At least they’ll sleep till we get back.”

She locked the door from outside and stepped out of the compound, leaving the gate slightly open.

Before heading to the bus stop, she crossed over to her neighbor’s house.

“Nneoma, please, I’m going out. I locked the children inside. They’re sleeping. If they wake up and start shouting, call me.”

Nneoma smiled warmly.

“Don’t worry. Go and enjoy yourself.”

Grace left, unaware that Nneoma had been nursing a dangerous jealousy.

THE SECRET

Nneoma had been secretly involved with Daniel.

She believed he would eventually marry her as a second wife.

But Daniel had refused.

“We can continue seeing each other,” he had told her. “But marriage? No.”

To Nneoma, Grace and her children were obstacles.

And now, an opportunity had presented itself.

As soon as Grace’s bus disappeared from sight, Nneoma’s smile faded.

“This is the perfect time,” she whispered.

She fetched a small keg of fuel and matches. Her hands trembled — not from fear, but from rage.

She entered Grace’s compound quietly.

The door was locked.

Through the window, she saw the three children sleeping peacefully.

“They won’t even know what happened,” she muttered.

She poured fuel through the window. The sharp smell filled the room.

For a brief second, her conscience whispered.

But jealousy screamed louder.

She struck a match.

The tiny flame flickered.

Then she threw it inside.

WHOOSH!

Fire exploded across the curtains and wooden furniture. Smoke filled the air instantly.

Nneoma ran back into her house and watched from her window.

Within minutes, neighbors began shouting.

“Fire! Fire!”

They rushed with buckets of water. They banged on the door repeatedly.

“It’s locked from outside!” someone yelled.

“Where is Grace?!”

THE CALL

Inside the bus, Grace’s phone began ringing.

She picked up, still laughing at something Daniel had said.

Then her face went pale.

“Fire?!” she screamed. “My children?!”

Her phone slipped from her hand.

She and Daniel jumped off the moving bus, running toward the compound in panic.

Back at home, the flames grew stronger.

Inside the room, the children had woken up.

But the sleeping medicine had weakened their bodies.

They coughed.

They cried.

But they could not move fast enough.

Outside, neighbors struggled to break the door.

And from her window, Nneoma watched.

Smiling.

WHEN THE DOOR FINALLY BROKE

The neighbors eventually forced the door open.

Smoke poured out lik

They rushed in with wet cloths covering their faces.

But it was too late.

The room was already consumed.

When Grace arrived, the compound was filled with people.

She pushed through the crowd.

“No… no… no…” she whispered.

The silence that followed was heavier than any scream.

Three small bodies were carried out.

Lifeless.

Grace collapsed.

Daniel stood frozen.

And across the compound, Nneoma pretended to cry with the others.

But someone had seen her.

An old woman who had been returning from the market had noticed Nneoma entering the compound with a keg.

She had thought nothing of it at the time.

Until now.

THE TRUTH

Police were called.

Investigations began.

The old woman spoke up.

Fuel residue was found.

And slowly, the truth surfaced.

Not just about the fire.

But about Daniel and Nneoma.

Daniel’s secret affair became public.

Nneoma’s jealousy was exposed.

And Grace’s negligence stood painfully clear.

Three adults.

Three wrong choices.

Three innocent lives gone.

WHOSE FAULT WAS IT?

Daniel — for betrayal and deception?

Grace — for drugging her children and locking them in?

Or Nneoma — for allowing jealousy to turn her into a murderer?

In the end, blame could not bring the children back.

Grace did not just lose her children that night.

She lost her peace.

Daniel lost his reputation.

And Nneoma lost her freedom.

Because jealousy, betrayal, and negligence can light a fire far more destructive than fuel ever could.

And sometimes…

The ghost that haunts you is not what someone else did.

It is the choice you made.
